What Fabric to use when making Cabaret Skirt, Dress and Harem Pants
Firstly our studio insists that our ladies where Harem Pants when they are wearing full skirts:
*If the skirt is a single layer and see through – solid harem pants (not see through)
*If the skirt is layered see through or a solid fabric then they can either wear harem pants which are solid – not see through – or transparent
I do this with respect for the audience watching a student or performer dance – they do not want to see your under wear or lack there of.
For full set of Skirts

I personally prefer soft flowy fabric, and here are a list, but please do not be limited to it. Go to a couple of fabric shops and look for that breathtaking colour or print that makes your heart skip a beat!
- Chiffon
- Shot Chiffon
- Silk
- Georgette
- Glitter dot – not the see through knitted type as this tears easily
- Liquid lame – Not the stiff tissue lame, this is soft fabric with a metallic sheen printed on it
- Satin – light weight and thinner I personally find better than the heavy bridal satin.
- Please stay away from stiff fabric like tissue lame and stiff organza – think sugar plum fairy here ladies!
Cabaret Dresses
Because these outfits are body fitting and you need to be able to move in them, elastic fabrics etc. are better. Lycra and stretch velvet are some that are used but not all. Go and have a look at the stores in your area, there are some interesting fabrics that can work!
Harem Pants
Almost anything goes, but I personally still tend to steer clear from anything stiff that will not show off your movement to its best.
- Silk
- Satin
- Glitter dot
- Chiffon
- Georgette
- And many more!
- Go and visit the local fabric shops and surf the net – let your imagination go wild and I hope you find that different but beautiful fabric that is flattering in colour, texture and shows off your dancing to its fullest potential!
