A word to the wise:
NOT ALL BELLY DANCE TEACHER ARE GOOD OR EVEN REMOTELY COMPETENT
“Caveat Emptor”
Ladies this is, as a teacher myself, probably one of the most frustrating topics to try and explain.
I have had students who attend class for a month or two, not even remotely knowing the basic movements, then promptly leaving and opening her own “Belly dancing studio”, charging half of what the going rate is and not even knowing what Middle Eastern dance is. She then advertises all over the show about her classes while she can’t even properly dance herself.
How frustrating as a teacher who has spent years and thousands trying to improve her skill and knowledge through workshops, training and travel – especially to the Middle East – to try and provide my students with the best possible knowledge and skill I can give them.
Think about it. You pay R150, R250 or even R350 per month multiplied by 12 gives you spending of between R1800 and R4200 per anum. If you are not being trained by a professional and competent teacher this is money flushed down the toilet!
Do not get me wrong, one person cannot possibly know everything, but a good teacher should be well rounded and knowledgeable on most aspects of Middle Eastern dance AND be willing to share this with her students.
So here we go.
1. Making the first call
2. Pricing
3. Tryout Classes
4. Teacher Qualifications
5. What should you be learning in your classes and what should your teacher be offering?
6. Where to find a good studio in South Africa
7. A good teacher ヨ Indicators
