Dancing with a single veil – By Aviva

kids veil

Holding a veil

A veil is held between your index and middle finger.  The other fingers in the hand are held gracefully and relaxed.

Using the veil as a frame

A veil has many different uses in dance, one of them is a pure and simple, but highly effective frame. Please see the photo’s on veils where some of my students generously posed with some veils for some ideas.

Frames vary from holding the veil at the back to holding it in the front or at the sides or tucked into a beautiful wrap.

Tips on Veil Dancing

  • *Veil is about grace and beauty, so what ever you do keep this in mind.
  • *After completing a movement always make sure that there is a flow from one movement to the next and that movements are not stilted, jagged or roughly thrown together.
  • *Play with your veil. Get used to catching it, holding it and handling it.
  • *Different fabrics move differently and thus new veils take getting used to.
  • *Take not of your surroundings, are there any objects that may cause problems, washing lines – if you are outdoors, ceiling fans, hooks etc.
  • *Be careful of dancing with veils close to open flames, candles, fireplaces etc.
  • *Never grasp or grab your veil – think delicacy and grace
  • *If you drape and then unwrap with a veil hide the tucking and pulling through graceful body and arm movements to draw the attention away from any fumbling that may occur.
  • *Vary the speed and complicated and easy movements to create an interesting and intricate choreography. This will lend depth and drama to your dancing.
  • *Do not dance continually in a flurry of movement. Pause or move very slowly to allow for “breathing”. This will keep your dancing from looking erratic and hectic and make it more deliberate and elegant.
  • *Take your time and let the music flow through you and your veil as if you were the instruments making the music.
  • *Avoid keeping the veil and arms too close to the body at all times, rather let it catch the air by making slightly bigger movements away from the body – let it take on a life of its own!
  • *Moving on your toes will lend grace to your movement and enhance flow.
  • *If you want to release the veil do so with intent, but also with care and a gentle flow – do not just toss it!
